Ragin’ Cajuns extend school-record win/shutout streak to six; earns sweep of Warhawks

MONROE – Lizzie Mayfield and Una Einarsdottir teamed up to account for a pair of second-half goals and the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Women’s Soccer team extended its school-record win and shutout streak to six matches after posting a 2-0 victory over ULM in a Sun Belt Conference match on Sunday at Brown Stadium.

Lauryn Starwood stopped five shots – all in the first half – as Louisiana (8-3-0, 4-2-0 Sun Belt) swept the season-series against ULM (0-7-0, 0-6-0 Sun Belt) and extended its streak of not allowing a goal to a school-record 602 minutes.

Mayfield, who posted her fourth match of the season with a goal and assist, broke open a scoreless battle early in the 50th minute after taking a pass from Einarsdottir and scoring past ULM goalkeeper Hailey Hillock for her team-high fifth goal of the season. The duo would team up nearly nine minutes later when Einarsdottir scored past Hillock late in the 58th minute for her fourth goal of the year.

That would be more than enough for Starwood, who improved to 6-1-0 on the season and lowered her goals against average to 0.15. The freshman was tested early by the Warhawks, who held a 9-2 advantage in shots in the opening half before Louisiana’s defense clamped down and limited ULM to four attempts after halftime.

Mayfield attempted three shots, including two on-goal, in the match as Louisiana had 11 players attempt at least one shot. Einarsdottir, Alex Augustyn, Savanna Young and Alyssa Abbott each recorded shots on-goal for Louisiana, which posted its fourth straight shutout victory over the Warhawks and won for the 10th time in the past 12 meetings.

Courtney Marten and Ashley Johnson each took three shots to lead the Warhawks with Marten placing two on-goal. Hillock recorded four saves for ULM.

Louisiana will close out the regular-season beginning on Thursday (Oct. 22) when it faces Little Rock in the home finale at the Ragin’ Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Ragin’ Cajuns will then close out the regular-season on Sunday (Oct. 25) against Arkansas State in 1 p.m., contest in Jonesboro, Ark.

The Ragin’ Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility will operate at a significantly reduced capacity for the 2020 season (unless state policy changes during the season). This will allow for fans and University students to be accommodated this season.

Should disruptions or modifications to the 2020 season occur due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Athletics will quickly communicate the adjustments through its social media channels and RaginCajuns.com. Additionally, the department will communicate any changes to specific entry and attendance protocols for home matches.

In the interest of public safety and following the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) Best Practices Guide, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Athletics Department is implementing a clear bag policy at all venues that host ticketed events effective with the 2020-21 competition season. Information about the clear bag policy can be found by visiting www.RaginCajuns.com/clearbag.
