Lusher boys, Kenner Discovery girls open soccer seasons with victories

A matchup of a pair of boys annual statewide contenders in Houma saw the visiting team emerge victorious Monday in a rematch of a very good quarterfinal match last season.
Defending Division III state champion Lusher Charter broke open a tight match after halftime and downed Vandebilt Catholic 3-1 in the season opener for both teams.
The match was all even 1-1 after one half but he Lions controlled play in the second half, scoring twice to pull off a big road win.
Seniors Russell Brown and Evan Walsh each scored a goal, as did sophomore Alex Lupin. Adan Kriek added an assist for Lusher.
The Lions edged the Terriers 2-1 in the Division III quarterfinals last season on the way to a state title.
Lusher will face another tough test against Brother Martin Wednesday at 7 p.m. while the Terriers will host H.L. Bourgeois Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
In girls action, Kenner Discovery blitzed Higgins 8-0 in Kenner in the season opener for both teams.
Freshman Valeria Gabrie was terrific, scoring five goals and added a pair of assists.
Juniors Trinitie Bynoe-Louper and Melanie Martinez and sophomore Gisele Salazar each added a goal for the Swamp Owls. Senior Karley Berteau added an assist.
Kenner Discovery will play at Thibodaux at 5:30 p.m. while the Hurricanes will host Patrick Taylor Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
