NEW ORLEANS — Kelsey Thaxton scored 16 of her season-high 26 points after halftime, including the go-ahead free throws with 2:45 remaining in overtime, to help LSU-Alexandria rally for a 76-73 women’s basketball victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.

The Generals overcame deficits of 34-23 in the 17th minute, 39-30 at halftime and 44-34 in the 23rd minute to earn their first victory of the season after three losses by an average of 35.7 points.

“We let them hang around,” XULA head coach Bo Browder said of LSUA, “and we gave ’em life.”

XULA (2-2) lost for the first time at home this season and the second time in a row overall despite 22 points and 20 rebounds from Victory Udechi, a career-best 16 points from Nina German and 12 points, seven rebounds and a career-best six assists from Abryhia Irons.

It was the first of five games in 10 days for XULA, which will visit city rival and NAIA No. 16 Loyola at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Udechi became the first XULA woman to grab 20 rebounds since Adecia Spain’s 21 against Louisiana College on Jan. 25, 1996. Udechi is the fourth XULA woman with 20 points and 20 rebounds in a game and the first since Henrietta Mitchell’s 28-and-20 performance against Tougaloo, Feb. 15, 1990.

Udechi grabbed 14 rebounds in the final 9 1/2 minutes.

German’s left-baseline jumper in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter tied the score at 66 and sent the game to overtime.
