LSUA ends Gold Nuggets’ season at RRAC Tournament

SAN ANTONIO — Xavier University of Louisiana scored in the top of the first inning, but LSU-Alexandria answered with a run in the second inning and two in the fourth to defeat the Gold Nuggets 3-1 Friday morning in an elimination game of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament.

XULA was 0-2 in the eight-team, double-elimination event and concluded its third varsity softball season at 18-29. The Generals (24-22) advanced to a 3 p.m. Friday elimination game against Louisiana Christian.
XULA was seeded eighth and LSUA fourth.

Winning pitcher Savannah Boyd (6-5) allowed one hit — Chenai Keyes’ one-out double in the first inning — walked two and struck out two in seven innings. Keyes scored XULA’s run after a two-out passed ball.

Lauryn McMahon’s bases-empty home run with one out in the second tied the score, and the Generals broke the tie on Boyd’s two-run single with one out in the fourth.

None of XULA’s final 11 batters reached base. Keyes — hit by a pitch to start the fourth, then thrown out at second trying to steal — was the Gold Nuggets’ final baserunner.

Vivionna Robles, pitching for the first time since April 11, started and worked the first four innings.
LSUA was 5-0 this season against XULA.
