LSU, Winstead earn 2018 David Toms titles
Baton Rouge, La. – The LSU men’s golf team wrapped up its fifth-straight David Toms Intercollegiate title in commanding fashion on Sunday afternoon at University Club. The Tigers finished with a tournament record 21-under par 843 (282-281-280) on its way to a 28-stroke victory over the runner-up, UL-Lafayette (+7).
“I’m very proud of all 10 of our guys who played this weekend,” head coach Chuck Winstead said. “Certainly, we have room to grow. We’ve got a lot of good players and I’m proud of how they performed this weekend.”
Trey Winstead (-7), Chris Woollam (-6), Garrett Barber (-5), Michael Snaders (-4) and Philip Barbaree (-3) swiped the top five spots on the individual leaderboard to make it a true LSU sweep.
Winstead utilized a three-round total of 7-under par 209 to claim medalist honors for the first time in his career. The lefty used exemplary play on the par 4s and 5s all weekend long. His 4.50 scoring average on par 5s ranked tied for first in the field alongside Woollam and his 3.90 scoring average on par 4s ranked as the second best in the field behind Barber (3.87 avg.). The sophomore and Baton Rouge native rattled off rounds 68-70-71 to win the individual title; he rolled in 17 birdies during the 54-hole tournament to lead the field.
“It’s incredible,” the younger Winstead said. “It’s really cool. It was great to have my family and friends here supporting me – it kind of kept me at ease.”
Woollam, who was making his LSU debut, played splendidly for the LSU B squad on his way to earning runner-up honors. Just like Winstead, Woollam played fantastic golf on the par 4s (3.90 avg.) and par 5s (4.50 avg.). A native of South Africa, Woollam carded rounds of 68-72-70 on his way to finishing at 6-under par 210. A fellow member of the LSU B team, Barber was one stroke off the pace of Woollam and placed third individually with a 5-under par 211 (70-73-68). Barber led the field in par 4 scoring average (3.87 avg.) and he ranked second in the field with 14 birdies.
Michael Sanders had the best finish of his young and bright LSU career with a 4-under par 212 to place fourth. After struggling a bit in Saturday’s initial round with a five-over par 77, Sanders responded with the low rounds on the course for both round two and round three. His second round 67 featured six birdies to go along with 11 pars and one bogey; he followed that up with a 4-under par 68 in round three that included an eagle, four birdies, 11 pars and two bogeys.
Philip Barbaree registered the seventh top-10 finish of his collegiate career with a three-round total of 3-under par 213. Barbaree put together rounds of 70-69-74 on his way to finishing in fifth place. His best round, the 3-under par 69 in round two, was highlighted by a near perfect scorecard that included four birdies, 13 pars and a bogey.
The rest of the LSU A squad, Luis Gagne and Nathan Jeansonne, finished tied for 13th and 18th places, respectively. Gagne had rounds of 73-75-72 to finish at 4-over par and Jeansonne fired rounds of 71-82-69 to finish at 6-over par.
Hayden White (T48th/+15), Carter Toms (T55th/+16) and Drew Gonzales (T60th/+18) rounded out the full list of competitors representing LSU this weekend. Full results and scores are listed below.
