Grant Delpit

BATON ROUGE – LSU safety Grant Delpit picked up his most prestigious preseason recognition on Friday as he’s one of only 40 players from across the country named to the watch list for the Walter Camp Player of the Year, the Walter Camp Foundation announced.

Delpit, who became only the ninth unanimous All-America in school history last year, is one of just 10 players on the defensive side of the ball listed on the Walter Camp Watch List.

The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in mid-November. The 2019 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 130 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN on Thursday, December 12. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s 53rd annual national awards banquet on January 18, 2020 in New Haven, Conn.

With the addition of the Walter Camp Award, Delpit is now listed as a preseason candidate for four national awards – Bednarik, Nagurski and Jim Thorpe – round out his list.

Called the No. 1 defensive back in college football heading in to the 2019 season by USA Today, Delpit is coming of a season that saw him lead the SEC in interceptions (5) and rank No. 2 in the league in passes defended (14). He also led the Tigers in sacks (5.0), finished third in tackles (74), and added another 10.5 tackles for loss.

Delpit and the rest of the preseason Top 10-ranked Tigers report for training camp on August 1 with the first practice scheduled the following day. LSU opens the season on Saturday, August 31 against Georgia Southern in Tiger Stadium.
