LSU incoming freshmen Burrell, Dixon-Bodie named Prep Athletes of the Year
BATON ROUGE – Sean Burrell and Sean Dixon-Bodie, two incoming freshmen on the LSU track and field team, were named Gatorade Athletes of the Year in their respective states on Monday for the sport of track and field.
Burrell, a native of Zachary, La., was Louisiana’s winner, and Dixon-Bodie claimed the honor in his home state of Connecticut.
For Burrell, it’s his second-straight season garnering this honor as he was also named the Gatorade Track & Field Athlete of the Year in 2019. Burrell won four state titles while competing for Zachary High School at the 2020 LHSAA Indoor State Championships hosted at LSU’s Carl Maddox Fieldhouse. He won titles in the 60 meter hurdles (8.06), 400 meter dash (48.71), 4×200 meter relay (1:29.10), and the 4×400 meter relay (3:23.06). He did not lose a single 400-meter race all season long going an unblemished 4-0 in that discipline. Burrell closed out his prep career as an 11-time LHSAA state champion and he brings personal bests of 20.77 in the 200 meters, 45.74 in the 400 meters, and 7.98 in the 60 meter hurdles to LSU.
Dixon-Bodie garnered the award in Connecticut after some special performances this winter during the indoor track and field season. The highlight of his senior campaign was a 52’ 1.75” mark in the triple jump at the 2020 Milrose Games that put him No. 3 on the high school all-time indoor list in America. He had two other performances of greater than 50 feet in the triple jump as a senior as well going 51’ 6.50” at the Hispanic Games (Jan. 4) and 50’ 9.25” at the VA Showcase (Jan. 19). Dixon-Bodie is a nine-time CIAC Class S state champion including a sweep of the triple jump, high jump, and long jump at the 2019 outdoor CIAC Class S meet.
These awards recognize outstanding athletic excellence along with high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated during competition and in the community.
