With a longer term contract extension in the books for defensive stalwart Cam Jordan, the Saints have been having conversations regarding locking up their best wide receiver with a new deal.

New Orleans Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis explained Monday in an interview with Adam Schein on Sirius XM that “some conversations” have taken place regarding a new contract for Michael Thomas:

Thomas, a former second round pick who has blossomed into one of the best wideouts in football, is currently in the final year of his rookie contract. Despite speculation that a new deal for the Ohio State product could average somewhere in the range if $20 million person season, it is not surprising that the Saints hope to keep him in Black and Gold for years to come.

“Yeah, listen, we’ve had some conversations, and I like keeping that close to the vest until there’s something to report. Look, we love what Mike’s done for us. He’s a fantastic player, one of the best at his position in the league, and hopefully we can keep him as a Saint for a long time as well,’ Loomis said on Mad Dog Radio.

None of this information comes as a surprise. Thomas recently told ESPN’s Mike Triplett that he expects everything to work out eventually.

“I feel pretty certain that everything will get taken care of and handled professionally,” Thomas said. “This is how I approach the game and how I show up to work the same way, and everything else will take care of itself.”
