Lions sweep weekly Southland baseball awards

HAMMOND, La. – Cody Grosse and Mason Knopp, members of the No. 28-ranked Southeastern Louisiana baseball program, were honored as the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week and Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced Monday.

Grosse enjoyed a 9-for-19 week at the plate (.474), scoring seven runs and driving in a pair. The junior from Plainfield, Illinois, doubled twice and picked up one stolen base. He walked four times and struck out just once.

His offensive performance helped spark the Lions to an undefeated week, picking up wins over Purdue, then No. 19-ranked Mississippi State and a series sweep at conference-foe Lamar. The wins vaulted Southeastern into the national rankings for the first time in 2018.

Knopp worked a career-high eight innings in the Lions’ 4-0 win over Purdue, combining on a two-hit shutout. The junior from Fort Scott, Kansas, walked one and struck out four to earn his first win of the season.

Southeastern wraps up its six-game road trip this week with games Tuesday at South Alabama and Wednesday at Jackson State, returning home to host Houston Baptist in a Southland Conference series Friday-Sunday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

General Admission tickets are $9 for adults and $6 for children (ages 3-12). Tax is included in the price of admission. Southeastern students are admitted free with a valid university ID card.
