Lions fall in final second at Bradley, 63-60

PEORIA, Ill. – Bradley’s Darrell Brown drilled a three-pointer with four seconds left as the Southeastern men’s basketball team lost their second straight game in the final seconds, falling to the Braves, 63-60, Saturday at Carver Arena.

The Lions came out on fire making eight out of 11 three-pointers in the first half and held a 28-27 lead at halftime. The scored their first 24 points via the three-point line and led 24-16 with 6:43 left in the first half.

Southeastern, however, was fighting foul trouble for much of the night. Seniors Keith Charleston and Moses Greenwood each picked up their fourth fouls less than a minute into the second half. Charleston played just 15 minutes while Greenwood, the Lions’ leading scorer and rebounder played just 20.

Bradley shot 26-for-39 from the free throw line as the Lions were whistled for 30 fouls. Southeastern shot 9-for-14 from the charity stripe.

Despite the foul trouble, SLU got valuable minutes off the bench from sophomore Kajon Brown and Pape Diop. Brown scored 11 points and four rebounds while Diop added nine points and 10 rebounds. Senior Marlain Veal led the Lions with 14 points and seven assists but he, Diop and Charleston all fouled out.

Southeastern took a 58-53 lead with 3:17 left when Veal found Greenwood under the goal for an easy lay-up. Greenwood was fouled and hit the free throw.

Brown hit two free throws with 2:37 remaining to give the Lions a 60-55 lead. Southeastern was held scoreless the rest of the way setting the stage for Darrell Brown’s game-winner as the Lions dropped their second straight game in the final seconds.

SLU outrebounded Bradley 39-32 and had 15 assists on 20 field goals. Southeastern, however, committed 20 turnovers.

The Braves were led by Brown with 19. Elijah Childs and Koch Barr each had 15. Southeastern still managed to hold Bradley to 16-for-47 shooting 34 percent. The Lions shot 20-for-47 from the field including 11-for-23 from the three-point line.

After a week off, Southeastern will wrap up the non-conference schedule Saturday, Dec. 29 at 4 p.m. against UL Lafayette at home.
