LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech University jumped out to an 18-3 lead over the Southeastern Louisiana men’s basketball Tuesday night at United Supermarkets Arena and held on to defeat a motivated SLU team 59-40.

Despite the early deficit, Southeastern (1-3) would fight back. Senior Moses Greenwood scored on an offensive rebound and nailed a jumper on back-to-back possessions to end a 14-0 TTU run. Junior Von Julien drilled a three-pointer moments later to get SLU back in the game trailing 23-10.

The Lions continued to claw their way back in the game as freshman Parker Edwards bottomed a three-pointer and Greenwood knocked down another jumper to make it 25-15 TTU. After Julien hit a free-throw, Edwards was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free-throws to make it 26-19. Suddenly, the raucous crowd of 8,650 in Lubbock was silenced by the furious rally by the Lions. However, the Red Raiders ended the half on a 6-0 burst to take a 32-19 lead at halftime.

Southeastern fought valiantly to stay in the game in the second half. Edwards, the Mandeville, Louisiana product, drilled another three-pointer to make it 40-27. Moments later, Edwards hit a jumper in the lane to make it 41-29 with 9:27 left.
That’s as close as the Lions would get as the Red Raiders (3-0) would pull away for the win and remain undefeated.

Despite the loss, the Lions held the 2017-18 Elite Eight participant, Texas Tech to 42 percent shooting (22-for-52).

“That is how we should play defensively every night,” said SLU men’s head basketball coach Jay Ladner. “I thought that was as hard as we have played in all four games thus far and if we bring that kind of effort nightly and defend like that then this team has a chance to really be good.”

TTU sophomore Jarrett Culver led all scorers with 21 points and was the only Red Raider to score in double figures. Greenwood led the Lions with 13 points and six rebounds while Edwards chipped in with 11 points.

Tuesday concludes a four-game week that included three games against power-five conference opponents (at LSU, at Nebraska and at Texas Tech).

The Lions will return home Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. to face the Stetson Hatters.

Fans are encouraged to come early to Saturday’s game as the Lions will unveil their 2017-18 Southland Conference Championship and National Invitational Tournament Banners.

Fans can listen to the play-by-play of Saturday’s game on 90.9 KSLU or online at LionSports.net on the men’s basketball schedule page.
