LHSAA Baseball Playoff Update: Curtis and Catholic seek closeouts, Kentwood advances, more series start Friday

Top-seed and defending Division I state champion John Curtis Christian opened its best-of-three quarterfinal series with eighth seed Byrd with a resounding 12-2 win Thursday at Mike Miley Stadium.

The Patriots (28-4) try to wrap up the Yellow Jackets (19-20) in game two today at 4 p.m. Game three, if necessary, would follow at Mike Miley Stadium.

Also in Division I, second seed Catholic of Baton Rouge whipped 10th seed St. Augustine 9-1 in the opener of their best-of-three series in Baton Rouge.

The Bears scored two runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead before St. Aug got its only run in the top of the fourth to make it 4-1. Catholic put it away with four runs in the fifth and one and the sixth.

Austin Andrishok went the distance, pitching a two-hitter to improve to 6-1 while Michael Mims (6-4) took the loss for the Purple Knights (20-18).

Cameron Dartez paced the Bears’ (26-8) seven hit attack, going 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI while Brennan Lambert had two hits. Will Spears and Tannard Darensbourg each had a single for the only Purple Knight hits.

Game two is set for today at 4 p.m. with game three, if necessary, to follow in Baton Rouge.

In Class 1A, fifth seed Kentwood blasted fourth seed Logansport 18-4 in five innings.

The Kangaroos (14-13) advance to Sulphur to the semifinals to square off with ninth seed Delta Charter next Thursday at 2 p.m. Delta Charter upset top seed LaSalle 9-2.

In Division I quarterfinal action today, fourth seed Brother Martin (18-14) will host fifth seed Holy Cross (20-13-1) at 5:30 at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium in game one of their best-of-three series. You can watch it live at CrescentCitySports.com.

Sixth seed Jesuit (21-14) opens a best-of-three series at St. Paul’s (21-10) at 6 p.m. You can watch game two and game three, if necessary, beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday at CrescentCitySports.com.

In Division II action, fifth seed De La Salle (29-7) is at fourth seed St. Thomas More (28-8) in game one of a best-of-three series at 6:30 p.m. in what should be a good series. Game two and game three, if necessary, are slated for Saturday.

Sixth seed St. Charles Catholic (27-9) is at third seed Teurlings Catholic (24-9) at 4 p.m. in game one of their series with game two and game three, if necessary, Saturday.

In Division III, top seed St. Thomas Aquinas (27-4) hosts sixth seed Holy Savior Menard (17-14) at 6 p.m. with game two slated for Saturday and game three, if necessary, to follow.

In Division III, defending state champion and sixth seed Riverside Academy (18-12) is at third seed Catholic of New Iberia (24-9) at 5 p.m. Game two is Saturday with game three, if necessary, to follow.
