Coastal Carolina vs ULL football 2020

FINAL STATS

LAFAYETTE – With the game knotted up at 27-27 with 5:30 to play, Coastal Carolina took the clock down to eight seconds and connected on a game-winning 40-yard field goal to upset No. 21 Louisiana, 30-27, on Saturday night at Cajun Field.

It was a back-and-forth affair, with the two teams matching scores for the first three quarters and going head-to-head in total yards (414-413) in favor of the Chanticleers.

Quarterback Levi Lewis led the way in both offensive phases, going 14-for-24 for 173 yards and a touchdown through the air and carrying the ball six times for 84 yards and a score on the ground, just the fifth rushing score of his career.

Following his performance, Lewis moved into sixth all-time in career passing yards (4,908) and tied Roy Henry for third place in career passing touchdowns (40).

Jalen Williams was Lewis’ go-to target as he set career highs in both receptions (4) and receiving yards (81), while Elijah Mitchell punched in two touchdowns on the ground, the 10th multi-touchdown performance of his career.

Linebacker Lorenzo McCaskill notched eight tackles and recorded his second sack of the season, while Ja’len Johnson added a career-high eight tackles of his own and produced 1.0 tackle-for-loss.

Lewis and company got things going early when he connected with Williams from 12-yards out to cap off a 75-yard drive and take an early 7-0 lead.

After Coastal Carolina responded on their first drive to tie things up at seven points apiece, the Chanticleers took their first lead of the game with 1:03 to play in the half when CJ Marable hauled in a 13-yard pass to go up 13-7 following a missed extra point.

With less than a minute to play, the Louisiana offense found its stride and maneuvered its way 77 yards down the field to set up an eight-yard quarterback keeper from Lewis. However, the extra point glanced off the post to send the game to halftime tied up at 13-13.

Coastal Carolina put together a massive drive to take a huge chunk of time out of the third quarter, marching 75 yards on 16 plays to go ahead 20-13 lead when Grayson McCall connected with Jaivon Heiligh for the six-yard score.

Mitchell responded on the next drive, sprinting around the right side of the offensive line and cruising into the end zone from nine yards out to tie the game at 20-20.

The Chanticleers took advantage of a turnover with 13 seconds in the third quarter, scoring a touchdown in the early seconds of the fourth quarter after McCall put the visitors up 27-20 with a three-yard touchdown scamper.

Facing a third-and-long, Lewis hit the turbo button and scrambled for 51 yards through the heart of the defense to set up a one-yard touchdown run from Mitchell, his second of the evening, to tie the game up once again.

With 5:30 to play, Coastal Carolina put together a game-sealing drive that shaved off 5:26 of the remaining time and ended in the game winning 40-yard field goal off the foot of Massimo Biscardi to clinch the 30-27 win.

Louisiana returns to action on Friday, Oct. 23, when it travels to Birmingham, Alabama, to take on Conference USA foe UAB. Kickoff from Legion Field is slated for 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
