Lamar’s Snell, Nicholls’ Mayers power to Southland Baseball Player of the Week awards
FRISCO, Texas – Lamar’s Ryan Snell mashed three homers and Nicholls’ Jacob Mayer continued a career-starting shutout streak, as the duo were the winners of the Southland Baseball Player of the Week awards for the second week of the 2023 season, which were announced Monday by the conference office.
Hitter of the Week: Ryan Snell, Lamar – Sr. – C – Hardin, Texas (Hardin HS)
Snell hit .333 with a team-best three home runs, three doubles and five RBIs for the undefeated Cardinals with a 1.000 slugging percentage. He had two home runs against No. 5 Texas A&M, including a three-run shot late in the game which proved to be the game-winner. He also had a ninth inning home run against New Mexico State which proved to be the difference in the game.
Honorable Mention: Wilson Ehrhardt, UIW.
Pitcher of the Week: Jacob Mayers, Nicholls – Fr. – RHP – Gonzales, La. (St. Amant HS)
Mayers had his second dominating start in as many weekends with 11 strikeouts in five shutout innings in an 8-0 victory at Louisiana Tech. Mayers allowed just two hits, one coming in the third where he struck out the side. He had two strikeouts in each of the other four innings and exited the game after five with a 2-0 lead. For the season, he is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA with 20 Ks and two hits allowed in 10 innings.
