Lady Tigers dominate Muggia Club in second game of Italian basketball tour
TRIESTE, Italy – The LSU Lady Tigers turned the second game of their exhibition basketball tour of Italy into an offensive and defensive showcase as they downed the Interclub Muggia Basketball squad by a score of 87-32 here Thursday night.
The Lady Tigers are now 2-0 on the tour which moves on to Milan after a luncheon stop in Verona on Friday. Milan is where the final game of the tour will take place on Saturday night against the FSG Academy of Holland. The Lady Tigers and their traveling party are due back in Baton Rouge on Sunday evening.
While the Tigers were scoring points in bunches, they team was also turning Muggia over, recording an amazing total of 25 steals from a team that was fourth in the nation last years in steals per game at just under 12 a game.
Sophomore Ayana Mitchell, who has been the video interviewer throughout the trip on the nightly recaps, put the microphone down and dominated the stats with a double double of 21 points and 17 rebounds. Redshirt freshman Faustine Alfuwa of Dacula, Georgia, had 14 points and six boards, while another Georgia freshman, Khayla Pointer, of Kennesaw, had 12 points, three assists and four steals
Chloe Jackson led LSU with five steals and three assists, while Shanice Norton had four steals and four assists (team high). Jaelyn Richard Harris also had three assists.
LSU jumped out to a 21-8 lead after the first 10 minutes and outscored Muggia 25-8 in the second quarter to up the margin to 30, 46-16, at intermission. The Italian team was held to just nine points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth as LSU posted 41 second half points.
Prior to the game, the LSU players and coaching staff took part in a clinic for youth of the area showing off some of the various training techniques used in the United States.
