Lady Lions Add Four More to 2022 Soccer Squad

HAMMOND, La. – First-year Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer head coach Nathan Gillespie announced the additions of four student-athletes, including Trinia Dalao, Mia Martin, Sam Ostrowski and Morgan Ward to the 2022 roster Thursday afternoon.

Dalao, a native of Miramar, Florida, will bolster the Lady Lions’ depth at midfield. The Everglades High School grad was named Broward County Scholar Athlete of the Year earlier this year. The SLU newcomer was also the team MVP two years in a row, including scoring 19 goals her senior year for EHS. She also played for Palm Beach Garden GA which advanced to the national playoffs in San Diego, California where the team placed second in the nation.

“Trinia is coming to us from a highly competitive program in the Miami Area,” said Gillespie. “We first watched her play at CASL in November and were entertained. She poses multiple threats in the attack as she is capable of playing in different roles and positions. She has a nose for sniffing out danger but also the tenacity on defense.”

Martin, out of Mandeville, Louisiana, played her high school career at Fontainebleau HS which is less than 30 miles from the SLU’s Strawberry Stadium. The local product was a three-year All-District 5-1 selection from her sophomore to senior seasons. The midfielder also earned LHSAA All-State 5A and academic All-State honors as a senior.

“Mia is a local talent that we had been aware of after attending our camps,” said Gillespie. “She is a passer of the ball and enjoys bringing other people into the game, she plays with a level of composure that is needed at the Division I level and has an internal drive to push and become better.”

Ostrowski comes to Southeastern by way of Brookhaven, New York. The midfielder was voted Long Island, New York’s Top 100 soccer players by the Long Island Newsday two years in a row. A Bellport High School grad, Ostrowski will add depth to a Lady Lions’ midfield that lost three starters last season.

“Sam is also coming from the Northeast where she played at another top-level club,” said Gillespie. “She is a dynamic player in the attack and can penetrate on the dribble or with a pass. She also has a great work rate out of possession and definitely understands the concept of winning the ball to attack with the ball.”

Ward, out of Rockville, Maryland, was a two-time Maryland All-State midfielder and forward at Rockville High School as a sophomore and senior. She was Rockville’s team captain as a senior as well

“Morgan has been exposed to some high level of competition when it comes to soccer,” said Gillespie. “She plays with a directness and powerfulness that will suit the Southland Conference. Not shy of making a tackle and carrying the ball forward.”

With the acquisitions of Dalao, Martin, Ostrowski and Ward, the Lady Lions complete the 2022 squad after announcing the additions of Kelsey Fuller, Maggie Denison, Anna Blankenship and Emma Ramsey on Wednesday.

“As a program, we are excited to get all of these young ladies on campus and ready to start pre-season camp with them,” Gillespie said. “They are all bringing a slightly different style of play, but styles that can be integrated and complement our current team very well. They are all great characters and will fit into the Southeastern and Hammond communities very well.”
