James Swash

RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech golfer James Swash has been named the 2019 Conference USA Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the league’s All-Freshman Team, it was announced on Thursday.

Swash became only the second golfer in Louisiana Tech history to earn Freshman of the Year honors and the first since Jack Lempke was named the league’s top freshman in 2011 when Tech was a member of the Western Athletic Conference.

The rookie helped lead the Bulldog Golf team this past season after averaging 73.45 strokes in 31 rounds, the lowest average by a freshman in program history. Swash finished the season as the highest-ranked freshman in Conference USA according to Golfstat rankings, while he ranks fifth all-time in school history in single-season scoring average.

Swash shot a season-low round of 68 in his first collegiate round of golf at the Louisville Cardinal Challenge (3-under-par), while he posted 11 par or better rounds in the 11 events he competed in this season. Swash was LA Tech’s top finisher in six different events over the course of his freshman campaign.
