BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Mya Stevenson’s grand slam home run capped a six-run second inning and led Marshall to a 9-2 win over Louisiana Tech in the 2021 Conference USA Championships at WKU Softball Complex Wednesday afternoon.

With the loss, Tech (22-30) saw its 2021 season come to a close.

Marshall (20-12) banged out 16 hits – five in the top of the second inning – in the game, but none bigger than Stevenson’s blast over the left field wall that capped the inning. It gave the Thundering Herd a 6-0 lead that it would never relinquish.

Aly Harrell, Grace Chelemen and Paige Halliwill each registered three hit performances in the win.

Bre Hernandez (9-12) got the start in the circle, and after working a scoreless first inning, was unable to get out of the second. She worked 1.1 innings, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks.

Kara Goff came on in relief. She worked the final 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits and one walk.

Tech had a number of opportunities to get back into the game, trailing 6-0. The Lady Techsters loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning with one out, but a strikeout and pop out ended the threat.

Tech loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Olivia Ellingson’s ground ball to shortstop was thrown away, allowing two runs to score to close the gap to 6-2. However, Tech was unable to plate anymore. Marshall scored three insurance runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Lindsay Edwards led Tech with two hits while Kylie Neel, Caroline Easom and Goff each recorded one hit.
