Krystal Freeman leads Tulane in 61-38 win over Loyola-New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University women’s basketball team defeated Loyola-New Orleans, 61-38, tonight in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse.

The Green Wave out-rebounded the Wolf Pack 63-36. The Olive and Blue locked down on defense only allowing Loyola to shoot 20.3 (13-64) percent from the field, while sinking 36.2 (25-69) percent of its own. Tulane logged 20 assists on 25 made baskets on the night.

Junior Krystal Freeman led Tulane with a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Mia Heide was tops on the team with 14 rebounds, while junior Kaila Anderson dished out a game-high nine assists. Heide pitched in eight points, three assists and two blocks and Anderson added three points, four rebounds and a block.

The Green Wave jumped out to a 23-5 lead after the first quarter with junior Krystal Freeman leading the way with six points and six rebounds. The Wolf Pack cut the lead to 11 at 27-16 with 1:04 left in the first half. The Green Wave closed the half with four-straight points to take a 31-16 lead into the half.

Freeman led Tulane at the break with eight points and six rebounds. Sophomore Mia Heide added four points and five rebounds, while junior Sierra Cheatham posted six points. Anderson recorded five assists in the first half. As a team, the Green Wave grabbed 36 rebounds and recorded 11 assists on 13 made baskets in the first half.

In the second half, the Wolf Pack cut the Green Wave’s lead to 47-38 with 6:45 remaining in the game, but Tulane responded with a 14-0 run to close the game. Sophomore Dynah Jones sparked the run with a three and Cheatham capped it off with a jumper off an assist from Anderson.

Tulane logged 30 points in the paint, 11 second chance and 17 fast break points.

Presley Wascom led the Wolf Pack with 14 points.

Up next, The Green Wave will tip-off the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. in Fogelman in Devlin against Jackson State.
