Kenner Discovery has suspended head coach P.J. Sprunk until further notice for an internal matter with the school. Sprunk is the first and only coach in the program’s young history.

Assistant coach Dan Erwin is the interim head coach of the Swamp Owls and Erwin coached Kenner Discovery to a 27-20 victory over Patrick Taylor at Hoss Memtsas Stadium Thursday night. Erwin joined the Kenner Discovery staff last school year after coming from Hahnville.

Here is the statement from Kenner Discovery CEO/Head of School Patty Glaser on the suspension:

AN ANNOUNCEMENT FROM KENNER DISCOVERY HEALTH SCIENCES ACADEMY (KDHSA) CEO DR. PATTY GLASER

On Friday, September 16, Dan Erwin was named the KDHSA High School Interim Head Football Coach for the 2022 Football Season.

The school administration and coaching staff have confidence in Interim Coach Erwin’s ability to lead the team. Coach Erwin joined Discovery during the 2021-2022 school year and was part of the football coaching team. He came to Discovery with many years of coaching experience. We are confident that under his leadership, the 2022 football season will continue to be a success. All football practices and games will proceed as scheduled.

P.J. Sprunk remains on staff as a Physical Education teacher. He is proactively participating in leadership training and will return to coaching students upon successful completion of the program. Shannon Craig is no longer employed by KDHSA.

On the field, senior Marcus Marcus Clark scored on a 45-yard run to give the Swamp Owls a 6-0 lead before the Tigers scored as Ethan Tran hit Harrison Pfister on a 75-yard touchdown pass and the two-point conversion was good to give Patrick Taylor an 8-6 lead.

Clark then scored on a 24-yard run to take a 13-8 lead.

The Swamp Owls then made it 20-8 early in the second quarter but with just 23 seconds left in the half, Tran scored on an eight-yard run to cut the deficit to 20-14.

In the third quarter, Tran hit Larry Cole on a 27-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 20-20 after the two-point conversion attempt failed with 8:09 to play in the quarter.

Clark then scored on a 12-yard run with 6:20 to play in the third quarter to provide the final margin.

The win was the third straight for the Swamp Owls (3-1), who host Sophie B. Wright next Friday at 7 p.m.

Patrick Taylor (2-2) will meet Fisher next Thursday evening.
