Kelley claims 4th Southland Player of the Week honor of season

HAMMOND, La. – After helping the No. 9 Southeastern Louisiana University football team to its fifth straight victory, Lion senior quarterback Cole Kelley was named Southland Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week the league office announced on Monday.

Sharing this week’s Southland weekly honors with Nicholls quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr., Kelley received conference player of the week honors for the fourth time since the start of the current season.

Kelley engineered a Southeastern attack that racked up 621 total yards in a 51-14 victory over Northwestern State – the fifth straight for the Lions (6-1, 4-0 Southland). Protected by his consistently excellent offensive line, Kelley connected with 11 different receivers in Saturday’s win. He threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for a career-high 67 yards and a touchdown in the win, as Southeastern topped 50 points in three straight games for the first time in program history.

The reigning Walter Payton Award winner has been even better this fall after winning the FCS version of the Heisman Trophy in the spring. The Lafayette, Louisiana native has thrown for 2,742 yards, 26 touchdowns and five interceptions on 216-for-290 passing, while also leading the team with eight rushing touchdowns.

Kelley leads the nation in completion percentage (74.5, 1st), points responsible for (206, 1st) and total offense (436.3 ypg), while also ranking among the national leaders in completions per game (30.86, 2nd), passing efficiency (180.0, 2nd), passing touchdowns (3rd) and passing yards (3rd).

Southeastern will return home on Saturday, hosting McNeese at 6 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN3, while also being heard in the Hammond area on Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM and The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM, as well as online at www.kajun107.net.
