Keiunna Walker named C-USA Co-Player of the Week
RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech sophomore guard Keiunna Walker was named the Conference USA Co-Player of the Week Monday following her performances in the Lady Techsters two league games.
Walker, who joined Middle Tennessee’s Anastasia Hayes with this week’s top honor, averaged 24.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.5 steals while shooting 73 percent from the field (19-26) and 91 percent (10-11) from the free throw line.
During the week, Walker set single game career-highs in points (28 vs. UTEP), rebounds (6 vs. UTSA) and steals (6 vs. UTEP). She also added five charges drawn in the two games.
She saved her best performance for Saturday when her 28 points, 6-steal, 3-rebound effort helped Tech hand UTEP its first C-USA loss of the year. Walker – who entered the week averaging just 10.0 points per game – hit 10-of-14 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws while drawing three charges in the win against a UTEP team that was ranked as one of the top defensive units in the league (per statistics).
With the game tied at 71-71 in the fourth, Walker hit a shot that gave Tech a lead it would never relinquish. With Tech holding onto an 84-80 lead with just under a minute to play, she took her third charge of the game to get the ball back.
In Thursday night’s loss to UTSA, Walker scored 21 points and grabbed a career-high six rebounds while adding three steals.
This is the first Conference USA Player of the Week award for the Lonoke, Arkansas, native. Walker will lead Louisiana Tech into Thursday night’s match-up against defending C-USA champion Rice in Houston.
