The three-time defending Class 4A state champions Karr Cougars continued their postseason dominance by defeating the Breaux Bridge Tigers 51-14 on Friday night at Behrman Stadium.

The No. 3 seeded Cougars got off to a fast start, taking a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter with scores on their first two possessions. Karr eventually built a 32-7 lead by halftime.

The second half would prove to be more the same as senior quarterback Leonard Kelly was nearly perfect. Kelly rushed for two touchdowns and completed 10 passes for 157 yards with three more touchdowns in the air.

“Starting fast was key,” Karr head coach Brice Brown said. “We wanted to jump out on them early. Leonard did a phenomenal job this week, too. It’s a testament of his preparation. He understands the importance of leadership around this time; and raising the play of his teammates. He has an understanding where the ball needs to go. He has improved on his posts-snap reads and his ability to read defenses. It’s going to be hard to show me quarterback in the state of Louisiana with his ability.”

Breaux Bridge had their moments while over-matched but Karr would prove to be to strong for the Tigers on both sides of the football. A focused Karr squad has mastered postseason preparation.

“It definitely was the preparation and focus we had coming into this week,” Kelly said. “From the film study and practice we executed. When we are able to put those two together, we can beat anyone in the state.”

The Cougars put a bow on the win with a Jamie Vance interception of TIgers quarterback Gavan Courville with four minutes left to play. Karr totaled over 475 yards of offense on its way to a convincing victory.

Karr’s quest for a fourth Dome appearance meets a severe test next week when the Cougars will travel up to Monroe to face the No. 2 seeded Neville Tigers.
