ALGIERS – For the Edna Karr Cougars, redemption is more than phrase. It’s a statement.

Friday night at historic Berhman Stadium, top-seeded Karr started their redemption tour after last season’s state title game loss to Carencro with a 43-8 first round victory over No. 32 Breaux Bridge in the Class 4A playoffs.

The visiting Tigers led by quarterback Kelby Hypolite looked to play spoiler and received a gift to start the game. Karr wideout and return specialist Aaron Anderson fumbled on the opening kickoff.

Breaux Bridge cashed in on the turnover, converting three consecutive fourth down conversion on their opening drive.

On 4th and 5, Hypolite connected with junior wideout Caleb Goodie for an 18-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion try was successful on a run by Brandon Boyd, and the Tigers had a surprising early 8-0 lead.

Like many times before, the Cougars showed poised and overwhelmed their opponent. Karr quarterback AJ Samuels linked up with wideout Yarun McMath for a beautifully thrown 45-yard pass on fourth down to the two-yard line. Michael Richard scored on the next play. On a fake PAT, holder Christopher Vasquez tied the game at eight apiece on atwo-point conversion run.

“We did an excellent job executing offensively,” said Karr head coach Brice Brown. “We still have to cleanup some things. Overall, I think we haven’t played our best football yet.”

The Cougars did not allow the Tigers to enter the red zone for the rest of the night after the first possession. Karr was well-prepared for the Breaux Bridge Wing-T offense.

“If you going to be successful in the postseason you must play good defense, and it begins by stopping the run,” said Coach Brown.

Samuels threw three touchdowns passes including another deep shot to McMath for a 53-yard score.

Led by junior Christopher Vasquez, Karr used a three-headed running attack to keep Breaux Bridge off balance.

Karr next hosts No. 16 Eunice in the second round.
