FRISCO, Texas – Luke Joujan and Didi Bredberg Canizares earned Southland Player of the Week honors after putting together strong weeks.

Joujan helped the New Orleans Privateers men’s tennis team clinch at least a share of the Southland regular season title. Bredberg vaulted the Privateers to a win against previously unbeaten in Southland play, UIW.

It is the first sweep of the weekly awards since the Privateers have joined the Southland.

Joujan won all of his matches as the Privateers pushed their Southland record to 4-0 ahead of their last conference match against Lamar.

The junior started the week by going 2-0 against Texas A&M-CC. He and Max Heinzel defeated Lucas Schurdevin and Nathan Schwartz 6-3. Schwartz was a First Team All-Southland doubles member last season.

In singles, Joujan defeated Schwartz 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 to help the Privateers come back from behind to defeat the Islanders 4-3.

Against UIW, Joujan and Heinzel came back from down 4-1 for a clutch win in doubles by a score line of 7-5 to give the Privateers the doubles point. Heinzel then beat Marwin Kralemann in straight sets 7-6 (3), 6-4.

Bredberg won her first Southland Player of the Week award after a demonstrative performance especially in singles.

The true freshman ran her singles mark to 10-1 on the season. She started the week by defeating defending Southland Player of the Year, Emma Aucagne 6-1, 6-2. Bredberg then turned around and beat Brandelyn Fulgenzi of UIW 6-3, 6-3 on Saturday.

In doubles, Bredberg and Raluca Puscas scored a victory against the Islanders’ tandem of Aucagne and Palina Saulevich by a 6-2 score.

Nine of Bredberg’s wins in singles this season have come in straight sets with the other coming by opponent retirement.
