The best prep football game in Louisiana this week is not part of the weekend.

It takes place tonight at Pan American Stadium when powerhouse programs John Curtis Christian and Warren Easton hook up at 7 p.m.

The Patriots (4-0), who have won 26 state championships on the field, are ranked No. 1 in the latest CrescentCitySports.com Class 5A state rankings, as well as the Louisiana Sportswriters Top 10 rankings.

They have been superb thus far this season.

Curtis has beaten Landry-Walker (42-18), powerful Bishop Lynch of Texas (21-14), Parkview Baptist (21-0) and Brother Martin (45-16).

Junior quarterback Collin Guggenheim is recovered from a foot injury which caused him to miss the first game of the season and part of the second game for Curtis. Guggenheim has completed 15-of-25 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns and he has rushed 25 times for 216 yards and two scores. Junior Corey Wren has 38 carries for 252 yards and two touchdowns while junior Shane Goins has 28 rushed for 166 yards and six scores. Junior Joel Taylor has four catches for 109 yards and a pair of scores.

Both teams have played Landry-Walker and Brother Martin.

“It is a short week for us, having played last Friday,” Curtis said. “They had two weeks to get ready. The fact that we played similar schedules gives you a little bit of a benchmark after we both played the same teams. We look at what they did well and did not do well against the similar opponents and they will have the same advantage. They will give us different looks. We have played well against good competition. Getting Guggenheim back has helped. Easton has played very good teams as well.”

The Eagles have played a tough schedule as well, defeating Jesuit (27-14), beating Brother Martin (48-20) and downing Landry-Walker 37-34. They are ranked second in both the CrescentCitySports.com and Louisiana Sportswriters Class 4A state rankings.

Warren Easton coach Jerry Phillips is looking forward to the challenge.

“We know that they are a good team,” Phillips said. “We know it is a good game to compete in and to measure yourself in. They have been there and won state titles and that is what we are working to do. We understand that people are going to pick them to win. Are we as good as they are? We are going to find out on the field. We are looking forward to it.”

The Eagles are led by senior Lance Legendre, who has completed 37-of-62 passes for 454 yards and 12 touchdowns while rushing for 149 yards and a pair of scores. Senior Kiaeem Green is the top receiver while junior Ashaad Clayton is the top running back for the Eagles.

Curtis won last year’s game 27-21 at The Shrine on Airline as Guggenheim rushed for two touchdowns. Legendre rushed for 111 yards and passed for 124.
