Curtis Patriots baseball

The select school quarterfinals get underway Thursday on a few fronts with two series involving area teams.

In Division I, top seed and defending state champion John Curtis Christian (27-4) hosts Byrd (19-19) in game one of a best-of-three series at 6 p.m. at Mike Miley Stadium. Game two is at 4 p.m. Friday and game three, if necessary, would follow at 7 p.m. at Miley.

“You really do not like not playing a real game for such a long period of time,” Patriots head coach Jeff Curtis said. “All season long, you play several games weekly and play in tournaments. We were fortunate to schedule a practice game with St. Thomas Aquinas, a very good team that plays fast which prepared us well. We are looking forward to getting back on the field.”

The Yellow Jackets knocked out District 1-5A rival and ninth seed Evangel Christian in three close games to advance while the Patriots had a double bye into the quarterfinals.

“Their record is deceiving,” Curtis said. “They have beaten an elite 5A team in Sulphur, played a tough schedule and played other tough teams close. They play in a good district with Parkway, Airline and Evangel. They will not be intimidated. They have seen everything we can throw at them. They have enjoyed success in the postseason. We know we have to accept the challenge and play well.”

The Patriots have another huge edge in the search for consecutive titles.

“This is a very motivated senior class and entire team,” Curtis said. “The only other time in school history that we won back-to-back state championships was in 1990-91 when my brother and Jay’s father, Johnny, was a key player for us. They really want to put their names in the record books. To win two straight would be a tremendous accomplishment but we must focus on the immediate task at hand, beating a good Byrd squad.”

It will be 10th seed St. Augustine (20-17) travels to Baton Rouge to take on second seed Catholic High (22-8) beginning this evening at 6 p.m. Game two is Friday at 4 p.m. with game three to follow, if necessary.

This is the first time the Purple Knights have ever advanced in the baseball state playoffs.

“They have worked hard to get to this point,” St. Augustine head coach Al Robinson said. “It’s an opportunity to move forward like last week but last week is out of our minds. I thought we had a good week of practice.”

The Purple Knights will in tough against the Bears.

“Catholic has a storied program and we happy to get the opportunity to play them,” Robinson said. “We want to perform our best and not worry about how they perform. The kids believe they can win, there is no doubt about it. They are locked in. This last month of the season we have played pretty good baseball and the confidence level is high. We played good competition in our district.”

The Purple Knights shocked seventh seed Rummel in three games to advance while the Bears had a double bye into the quarterfinals.

In Class 1A, fifth seed Kentwood (13-13) travels to fourth seed Logansport (14-13) at 5 p.m.

The Kangaroos had a bye before defeating 12th seed East Iberville 8-4 in the regional round while Logansport had a bye before bouncing 13th seed Centerville 14-4 in five innings in the regional round to advance.
