John Curtis, Mount Carmel take region track and field titles

A week after finished second to Jesuit in the Catholic League District Track & Field meet, John Curtis Christian flipped the script Wednesday at the Class 5A, Region 3 meet in Thibodaux at Thibodaux High.

The Patriots won the boys team title with 104 points with the Blue Jays second with 89 points. Karr was third at 68 points.

John Curtis star Justin Horne, the subject of a feature at Crescent City Sports this past week, was dominant again, winning the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. Horne also anchored the Curtis 4×400 relay win.

Tyler Hayes was also a double winner for the Patriots, taking the triple jump and long jump competitions.

Other winners for Curtis was Kyron Sumler in the high jump and Zach Drake in the javelin.

The Patriots also won the 4×400 relay.

Mount Carmel Academy, who won the Catholic League girls title, won the girls competition in Thibodaux.

The Cubs scored 96 points while Thibodaux was second with 76 points. Destrehan was third with 62 points.

Catalina Reichard of Mount Carmel won both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs, Natalie Doiron of the Cubs won the pole vault competition and Sophie Junius captured the javelin title. The Cubs also won the 4×800 relay.

Marley Richard of Destrehan was the sprint star, winning both the 100 and 200-meter runs.

The top three finishers in each competition qualify for the state meet.
