2023 Ponchatoula girls basketball

Four area teams are seeking state championships on the final day of the LHSAA Girls State basketball championships Saturday at University Center in Hammond.

At noon, John Curtis Christian goes for an amazing seventh straight state title when the top-seeded Lady Patriots take on No. 2 Lafayette at noon in the Select Division I state title game.

The two powers have not met this season but the Lady Patriots outlasted the Lions 69-66 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic last season.

At 2 p.m., No. 1 seed Lafayette Christian battles No. 3 St. Louis Catholic for the Select Division II title.

Both are defending state champions. The Lady Knights have won the last two Division III state championships while the Saints won the last two Division II state titles.

At 4 p.m., it is the Division III Non-Select championship pitting No. 1 Rosepine against No. 2 Amite. The Lady Warriors are the defending Class 2A state champion.

At 6 p.m., No. 1 Wossman takes on No. 2 Albany for the Non-Select Division II championship. Wossman is the defending Class 3A state champion.

The nightcap at 8 p.m. is a rematch of last year’s Class 5A state championship game as No. 2 Parkway, featuring the nation’s top-rated player in Mikaylah Williams, takes on defending champion and No. 5 seed Ponchatoula. The Green Wave edged the Panthers 80-79 in a double overtime thriller for the title a year ago.
