Jesuit’s Elijah Morgan earns December Athlete of the Month recognition
NEW ORLEANS – Elijah Morgan, a senior guard from Jesuit High School’s basketball team, has been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for December. Monthly award-winners are chosen in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Morgan was a staple of consistency and superior play for the Blue Jays in December. He averaged 22 points per game, 2.8 assists and 4.6 rebounds and was named MVP of the Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO tournament as well as the Chalmette Valero Christmas Tournament. During the Chalmette tournament, he scored 32 points in the semifinal match and another 32 points in the finals.
Through the month of December, the 5-11 sharpshooter connected on 45% of his shots from behind the arc. Morgan was the primary reason Jesuit opened the year with a 19-2 record through December. He has been offered an academic scholarship to Notre Dame, called the “Posse Scholarship.”
Morgan was selected over three other basketball standouts and one football star.
Krystal Freeman, a 6-0 sophomore forward for the Tulane women’s basketball team, capped a solid month of December by being named the MVP of the Miami Holiday Classic after averaging 13.5 points and seven rebounds in wins over Central Michigan and Florida A&M.
Xavier University’s Rayshawn Mart averaged 13 points per game for the Gold Rush, including hitting free throws to win two separate games in the final seconds. Mississippi State junior guard Lamar Peters, from Landry-Walker High School, averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.7 rebounds as the Bulldogs went 6-0 in the month of December to close 2018 with a 12-1 record and the No. 17 ranking in the country.
The football standout is Edna Karr’s Jahii Howard, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA Class 4A Championship after scoring three touchdowns in a 28-20 come-from-behind victory over Warren Easton.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1957. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
