Jesuit, Holy Cross, St. Scholastica capture state swimming titles

These are special times for Jesuit athletics.

The Blue Jays captured the state cross country championship last week.

The Jesuit football team has an unbeaten record and is in the Division I semifinals this Friday night at 6 p.m. against rival Brother Martin at Tad Gormley Stadium.

On Saturday, the Blue Jays added another trophy to their vast athletic case.

Jesuit won the Division I state swimming championship at SPAR Aquatic Center in Sulphur.

The Blue Jays edged Catholic of Baton Rouge for the title with St. Paul’s finishing third. Baton Rouge was fourth with Fontainebleau fifth.

It was a team effort for the Blue Jays, who won the title based on their performance in relay races.

Jesuit won the 200-yard medley relay, the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

Individually, Truman Breigthaupt of Jesuit won the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:38.39 while Jack Primeaux of the Blue Jays won the 100 backstroke in a time of 51.50.

Zane Cocran of Northshore captured the 50 freestyle in a time of 21.29.

On the girls side, St. Joseph’s won the Division I team title by a wide margin over second-place Dominican. Northshore was third with Mandeville fourth and Mount Carmel Academy fifth.

Dominican won the 200-yard medley relay while Mia Poirier of Northshore was a star, winning the 200 and 500 freestyle. Panthers teammate LuLu Szumski took first in the 100 breaststroke and Northshore won the 400 freestyle relay. Ellie Fritscher of Mandeville won the 200 individual medley and Mandeville won the 200 freestyle relay.

In Division II, St. Scholastica captured the team title, easily outdistancing second place St. Thomas More. Caddo Magnet was third with Lakeshore fourth and Academy of the Sacred Heart fifth.

The Doves won the 200-yard medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay while individually, Gabby Hall of SSA won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:57.57 and won the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:00.08.

Holy Cross easily won the Division II boys state title with Lakeshore second. Patrick Taylor was third with Ruston fourth and St. Thomas fifth.

Logan Beebe of Holy Cross was the star.

Beebe took first in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:49.41 and won the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:58.46.
