Jesuit, Holy Cross, SSA win state swim titles

It was a banner day for New Orleans area teams at the LHSAA state swimming championships at the SPAR Aquatic Center in Sulphur on Saturday as Jesuit and Holy Cross claimed state titles, St. Scholastica won a girls state championship and Mandeville placed second.

The Blue Jays repeated as boys champions, fighting off rival Catholic of Baton Rouge with 448 points to 405 for the Bears. Dutchtown was third, East Ascension finished fourth and Northshore was fifth.

Charles Korndorffer, who officially signed with Notre Dame earlier in the week, was the star as he won both the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke. Mike Foley won the 100 freestyle and the Blue Jays won the 200-yard medley relay the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.  Michael Bonson of Northshore was terrific, winning both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.

In Division II, after finished second to Ruston a year ago, Holy Cross turned the tables, easily capturing the title with 423 points with Ruston a distant second. Destrehan was third with Lakeshore fourth.

Lane Coleman was the star for the Tigers, winning both the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Antonio Rivera won the 200 individual medley while Carson Doll won the 500 freestyle. Holy Cross also won the 200-yard medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Jacob Price of Lakeshore won the 100 freestyle and the Titans won the 200 freestyle relay.

In girls competition, St. Joseph’s dominated to win the Division I title with 349 points, led by Kirby Black, who won the 100 backstroke. Mandeville was second. The Skippers won the 200-yard medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Mount Carmel Academy was third as Emily Schexnayder was the star of the meet, capturing both the 100 butterfly and the 100 freestyle. Caeleigh Miller of the Cubs won the 50 freestyle.  Dominican was fourth with Northshore fifth.  Hannah Morris won the 200 individual medley for Dominican.

After finishing second to St. Thomas more a year ago, St. Scholastica dominated to win the Division II state title with the Cougars a distant second. Gabriella O’Neill starred for the Doves, winning both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. SSA also won the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay in accumulating 429 team points. Ruston finished third.

Newman’s boys were among the team state title winners earlier in the championships.
