Jesuit downs Evangel to advance to Division I boys basketball quarterfinals
With its soccer team in Lafayette winning a state championship and with all other Division I regional round games to be played Tuesday, Jesuit got a leg up on the competition on what turned out to be a special day for Blue Jay athletics Saturday.
The fifth-seeded Blue Jays held off 12th-seed Evangel Christian 57-47 at Jesuit in the regional round of the playoffs Saturday afternoon.
Jesuit led throughout, taking a 16-5 lead after one quarter and a 25-15 lead into halftime. It was 40-26 after three quarters.
Elijah Morgan led the Blue Jays (22-7) with 19 points while Will Landrieu finished with 17. Noah Varnado added eight points. Malik Cooper topped the Eagles (13-16) with 20 points, Justin Holmes had 13 points and J’Vontae Evans finished with 11 points.
Jesuit advances to take on the winner of Tuesday’s meeting between fourth-seed McKinley and 13th-seeded Archbishop Shaw in the quarterfinals.
