Jesuit, Archbishop Shaw, Teurlings Catholic capture team state wrestling titles

BOSSIER CITY – The storied Jesuit wrestling program, with 23 titles to its credit, had not won state championship since 2009.

That streak ended Saturday night in Bossier City and the total increased to 24.

The Blue Jays parlayed a pin by heavyweight Spencer Lanosga at 285 pounds in the final match of the night to edge Catholic of Baton Rouge 263.5-259.5 for the Division I state championship at Brookshire Grocery Arena.

Lanosga took the drama out of play quickly, pinning Ethan Simmons of Brother Martin in just 41 seconds to clinch the team victory.

Catholic had taken a two-point lead when Thomas Domangue upset Jackson Caldarero of Jesuit 10-5 at 182 pounds, leaving the outcome to Lanosga.

A defending state champion, Lanosga did not wrestle until late in the season and he could not have arrived at a better time for the Blue Jays as he completed a 10-0 season with the deciding victory.

Also claiming a state title for Jesuit was sophomore Bodi Harris at 113 pounds with a 6-2 victory over Grant Grizzaffi of Catholic of Baton Rouge.

Catholic had the most wrestlers in the finals with six but Domangue was the only one to emerge as a champion.

Former Blue Jay wrestler Jon Orillion etched his name in the record books for Jesuit, joining the legendary Sam Harnsongkram (18), Mark Strickland (2), Carlos Bertot (2) and Edwin Stacy (1) as coaches to win state titles with the Blue Jays.

Defending champion Brother Martin finished third with 244 points and had a pair of champions in sophomore Richie Clementi, who won his second straight title, pinning Christian Worley of Catholic while Kent Burandt was victorious at 145 pounds, whipping Elijah Gilmore of Catholic 15-0. Burandt finally broke through after second place finishes in 2021 and 2022.

Clementi reached a pair of milestones, winning his 60th match of the season, tied for the most in program history in one year, and achieving 100 wins in his young career. Clementi is the fastest to reach 100 wins in Brother Martin history. Reed Hart had 60 wins for the Crusaders in the 2009 season. Clementi also recorded 44 pins, one short of Hart’s season record of 45, also established in 2009.

Fontainebleau, which finished eighth, had a pair of champions in sophomore Samuel Favaza, who pinned Jesuit’s Michael Barnett at 106 pounds while Aiden Lindsey of the Bulldogs won at 152 pounds with a 7-1 decision over Gunner Guidry of Holy Cross.

The Tigers, who finished fourth, had a champion in Nick DiGeralamo. The sophomore handled Rory Horvath of Brother Martin 12-4 in the final.

Senior Landry Barker of St. Paul’s made it two straight state titles with a 12-2 victory over Gabriel Bonin at 170 pounds as the Wolves finished fifth.

The Most Outstanding Wrestler in Division I was Ernie Perry of Airline, who defeated Kristian Scott of Catholic 12-1 to become a rare four-time state champion.

Archbishop Shaw has proven to be outstanding in football and basketball, capturing state championships in both sports. The Eagles have also captured state titles in cross country and bowling.

The Eagles have emerged in wrestling over the past decade under former Eagles state championship wrestler Brandon Surrency, finishing second in the state in Division II in 2022.

Moving down to Division III this year, the Eagles have flown to the highest altitude and have joined its other sports brethren as a state champion.

Shaw captured the LHSAA Division III state title, edging defending champion Basile 215.3 to 213. De La Salle finished third with 178 points.

The Eagles were led by freshman Caden Judice of Archbishop Shaw, who captured a state title at 106 pounds by pinning Patrick Fontenot of Basile, setting the Eagles on a winning path. Blake Andre (106), Hayden Tassin (126), Carson Dalton (138), and Raymond Howard (285) all finished second for the Eagles.

Junior Dylan Duvernay of De La Salle captured his second state championship, winning at 113 pounds while senior Luke Robertson of the Cavaliers completed an unbeaten season at 22-0, edging Aden Laborde of John Curtis Christian 5-4 for the title at 170 pounds.

John Curtis has a champion in sophomore AJ Smith, who defeated Will York 12-7 for the title at 195 pounds.

The Most Outstanding Wrestler award went to senior Camden Gautreaux of DeQuincy, who won the state title at 138 pounds.

In Division II, Teurlings Catholic continued its dominance, repeating as state champion and winning its 11th state title in the last 13 years, easily outdistancing North DeSoto.

In the process, the Rebels set a new record, scoring the most points in state championship meet history with 356.5 points with North DeSoto a strong second at 305 points. Archbishop Rummel was third with 190 points.

The Rebels had six champions, including Alex Rozas (106), Layne Rivette (132), Ethan Boudreaux (138), Hudson Sharon (15), Braeden Simoneaux (170) and Kole Hayes (285).

Boudreaux, who captured his third state title, was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Rummel junior Kaiden Triche won the championship at 113 pounds, pinning Daniel Daspit of Teurlings Catholic.
