Islanders’ Lorieul headlines Southland Men’s Tennis All-Academic teams
FRISCO, Texas – Pascal Lorieul of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was named the 2023 Southland Conference Men’s Tennis Student-Athlete of the Year, as the annual All-Academic Team was announced Thursday.
Lorieul carries a 3.94 grade point average while majoring in biomedical science. He clinched the conference tournament to send the Islanders to the NCAA Tournament in a 4-3 victory over New Orleans in the finals. He was named to the All-Conference First Team doubles after going 18-6 overall and 4-1 in conference, and won all three doubles matches in the conference tournament. Lorieul posted non-conference singles wins over Southern Miss, UL-Lafayette, BYU, UT Arlington and UTRGV. He helped men’s tennis win its 22nd conference championship.
Tournament champion A&M-Corpus Christi and regular season champion New Orleans each had four all-academic selections, while Bryant, Lamar, NJIT, and Nicholls had one selection each.
The all-academic teams are voted on by a head coach, sports information director and an academic/compliance staff member from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA and completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to qualify for All-Academic selection. Student-Athlete of the Year nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
