Hughes, Jones, Rantz, Powell, Monica to speak Tuesday at GNOSF QB Club Luncheon

Tyrone HughesFormer St. Augustine star and New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame inductee Tyrone Hughes, former Tulane star and Tulane athletic Hall of Fame inductee Terrence Jones, former LSU pitcher and broadcaster Ronnie Rantz, Landry-Walker head coach Emmanuel Powell and St. Charles Catholic head coach Frank Monica are the featured speakers at the weekly Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation Quarterback Club on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at noon, presented by Home Bank at Rock’n’Bowl, 3016 South Carrollton Avenue in New Orleans.

A native of New Orleans, Hughes starred at St. Augustine High School and Nebraska before starring for his hometown New Orleans Saints from 1993-1996. He earned All-Pro honors and Pro Bowl honors in 1993 and set an NFL record for return yardage in a single season in 1994. Hughes was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame in 2015.

A native of New Orleans, Jones starred at Lutcher High School and Tulane, where he played quarterback from 1985-88. He went on to play professionally in the CFL. Jones left Tulane as the career leader in passing yards, passing touchdowns, completions and attempts while accounting for a school record 9,445 yards of total offense. He was inducted into the Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996 & the Allstate Sugar Bowl Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. Jones works with the Tulane Radio Sports Network on Green Wave football broadcasts.

Ronnie RantzA native of Alexandria, Rantz was named to his position with the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. A long-time broadcaster, Rantz formed Jumbo Sports Network and has been active in televising college and high school games for many years while covering LSU. Rantz starred in baseball at Holy Savior Menard before pitching at LSU, where he was part of a national championship in 1993. He went on to pitch professionally in the San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers organizations.

In his sixth year as the head coach at Landry-Walker, Powell guided his team to the Class 5A state championship in 2016 as the Chargin’ Bucs beat West Monroe 50-21. They scored 50 or more points in all five playoff victories.

A graduate of Leon Godchaux High and Nicholls, Monica has 48 years of coaching under his belt. In his 21st year at St. Charles Catholic, he guided the Comets to the 3A state title in 2011 and to state title game appearances in 2005, 2006 and 2016. Monica coached Lutcher to a state title in 1977 and coached Riverside to a state championship in 1983. He also served as head coach at Jesuit and as an assistant coach at Tulane.

Speakers from the Saints, LSU, Tulane and prep football will address the audience weekly each Tuesday, along with special guest speakers from the sports world locally and nationally.

A local high school player of the week is chosen throughout the season with a metro prep player of the year announced at the end of the season, sponsored by the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. Lunch is served.

In addition, Chevron sponsors student-athletes of the week, who receive plaques and recognition for their accomplishments in the classroom.

Annual standard membership is $50. Luncheons are $20 per person for members and $25 per person for non-members for the 16 week schedule (Aug. 28-Dec. 11). All are welcome to attend.
