SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Incarnate Word sank 10 three-point field goals on the way to a 76-69 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in Southland Conference women’s basketball action Wednesday night at the McDermott Center.

Southeastern (9-14, 4-8 Southland) continues to struggle on the road, falling to 0-6 in Southland Conference play away from the University Center. The host Cardinals (3-19, 3-8 Southland) won their second straight home game with Wednesday’s victory.

Charliee Dugas led three Lady Lions in double figures with 17 points, while Jaclyn Scholvin added 13 points and five assists. Caitlyn Williams posted her third double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Gabby Bowie led UIW with 17 points. Lunden Henry and Angelica Wiggins joined Bowie in double figures with 15 and 12 points, respectively, off the bench as the Cardinals enjoyed a 47-10 advantage in bench scoring. Alexis Henry and Imani Robinson paced Incarnate Word with eight rebounds each.

The two teams played to a stand still for the opening minutes, as Scholvin gave SLU a 12-10 lead with just under four minutes left in the opening quarter. However, UIW closed the period with an 11-2 run to go into the second period with a 21-14 advantage.

UIW would grow the lead to as many as 10 in the second quarter. Southeastern would close the gap to four on a three-point play by Williams at the end of the half, as the Lady Lions went into the break facing a 36-32 deficit.

A bucket by Williams and a free throw by Brailey pulled SLU within, 36-35, early in the third quarter. But the hosts would answer with a 13-2 run capped by a three-point play from Angelica Wiggins to put UIW up, 49-37, with 4:15 left in the period.

The lead would grow to as many as 16, but SLU closed the third quarter with six straight points to go into the final quarter within striking distance, trailing 57-47, heading into the fourth quarter.

A three by Bowie pushed the lead to 15 with 7:36 remaining and Southeastern just couldn’t make enough stops to mount a comeback. SLU pulled as close as six in the final minute, but UIW did enough to hold off the Lady Lions rally.

On Saturday, the Lady Lions will host McNeese at 1 p.m. in the University Center to open a Southland Conference doubleheader, with the men’s 4 p.m. contest serving as the nightcap.
