It has been a banner year for former LSU pitcher Jason Vargas.

First, Vargas had a big first half of the season and earned an American League All-Star game appearance. Then, after a bit of a slump, Vargas is finishing with a flourish.

He has won his last four games, including a 2-1 victory over Detroit Tuesday night in which Vargas pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts to improve to 18-10 with a 3.94 ERA. The 18 wins tie him with Cleveland ace Corey Kluber for the most wins in the league and in the majors as Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers also has 18 wins.

It has been a banner year for the Houston Astros and former LSU All-American Alex Bregman has played a large role in the Astros’ success.

Houston clinched home field advantage for the American League Division Series playoffs with a convincing 14-3 win against the Texas Rangers Tuesday night.

Bregman had three hits and two RBI to help key the win. He is batting .284 with 37 doubles, five triples, 17 home runs, 64 RBI and 17 stolen bases as he continues to become a complete player for Houston. He has a four-game hit streak (7-for-16/.437).

Former Parkway High and Centenary star Seth Lugo pitched a gem for the New York Mets, hurling six shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out seven in a 3-2 win in a 3-2 win over the Braves Monday night. Lugo is now 7-5 on the season with a bad team, a good mark.

D.J. LeMahieu is a primary reason that Colorado is leading in the race for the final wild card playoff berth in the National League.

The former LSU standout has backed up his National League batting championship with another fine season. He is batting .311 with 28 doubles, four triples, eight home runs and 64 RBI for the Rockies.

Also helping the Colorado drive for the playoffs is former UL-Lafayette catcher Jonathan Lucroy, who has raised his average to .301 with a four-game hit streak (7-for-14/.500).

Former Hamilton Christian and McNeese star Jace Peterson has a four-game hit streak (4-for-11/.364) for Atlanta, including his second home run of the season.

In the midst of an injury-plagued season, former Tulane slugger Rob Segedin had a big game for the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday night, going 2-for-4 with a double and his first RBI in a 9-3 win over San Diego.
