Holy Savior Menard shuts out Pope John Paul II to open series

One of the favorites in Select Division III is on the brink.

No. 7 seed Holy Savior Menard (27-7) broke a scoreless tie I the top of the sixth inning, scoring three runs and downed No. 2 Pope John Paul II 3-0 in Slidell Thursday evening.

Cooper Scott singled home a run and Drake Arledge delivered a 2-run single to cap the rally for the Eagles.

Andrew Prejean did the rest, shutting out the Jaguars in six innings of work. Prejean allowed just three hits, walked two and struck out eight to pick up the win. Cody Lyons pitched the seventh inning to pick up the save.

Carson Johnson, Logan Marble and Cody Pisciotta each had a hit for Pope John Paul II (25-6). Caden Amie was the losing pitcher. He went the distance, allowing three runs on five hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

Game two is this evening at 6 p.m. with a third and deciding game, if needed, set for Saturday at noon.
