Always known for being tough in wrestling, football, basketball and baseball, a new sport is king at Holy Cross.

The top-seeded Tigers claimed their first-ever state soccer championship, overcoming second-seed Beau Chene 3-1 for the Division II state championship at the Ragin’ Cajun Soccer/Track Complex on the campus of UL-Lafayette.

The Gators took the early lead on a goal by Adam Eglin just ten minutes into the match and it stayed that way until halftime.

Ethan Garvey changed that with an early second half golf before Sebastian Aguilar got what proved to be the game-winner just minutes later. Chad Cadiere added an insurance goal with under 16 minutes left to provide the final margin of victory.

It was the second win of the season for Holy Cross (20-3-2) over Beau Chene (18-8-5). The Tigers whipped the Gators 5-0 in the regular season. This one was closer but the Tigers were simply too good.

In the girls Division II title match, top-seed St. Thomas More fought off seventh-seed Central Lafourche 1-0.

Mattie Marks scored the only goal of the game in the first half for the Cougars (18-6-3). The Lady Trojans finished their season 23-5.

This afternoon, a rivalry is renewed as third-seed St. Scholastica (21-1-4) battles eighth-seed and District 4-I rival Mandeville (23-5) at 4:30 p.m. for the Division I state championship.

The Doves beat the Lady Skippers 4-1 on Jan. 23.

This afternoon at 2 p.m., fourth-seed Newman (15-2-2) takes on third-seed Episcopal of Acadiana (14-2-5) for the Division IV girls state championship.
