Head coach Justin Hill inked to 3-year contract
LAKE CHARLES – McNeese Director of Athletics Bruce Hemphill has announced a three-year contract for baseball head coach Justin Hill effective immediately.
The contract has been approved by the University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors, which oversees nine state universities including McNeese State University.
“Coach Hill has made great strides on the field and is doing a magnificent job of preparing his young men for life after baseball,” said McNeese Director of Athletics Bruce Hemphill. “He has made some great improvements to the facilities which enhances the fan experience and he and his athletes have been very involved in the community.”Hill is stepping into his fifth season as the Cowboys skipper and is coming off a Southland Conference championship in 2017, the first for the program in 11 years, and was named the league’s Coach of the Year.
He’s the only baseball coach in school history to win 30 or more games in his first four seasons.
“First of all, I would like to thank (McNeese President) Dr. Daryl Burckel and Mr. Bruce Hemphill for their confidence and commitment to me and my family,” said Hill. “This is a significant moment. The McNeese baseball program, our kids, alumni, and supporters deserve commitment and stability, and I’m thankful that Melissa and I have been a part of this process for the past four years.
“I cannot overstate how incredible it is to lead a program that has positively impacted so many people including our players, coaches and their families. We are blessed beyond measure.”
“Justin has done a wonderful job, not only in consistently assembling excellent coaching staffs, but also in building his program with success on and off the field,” said Kendall Rogers, Managing Editor for D1Baseball.com. “McNeese has made a strong commitment to Justin and I couldn’t be happier for him.”
In his four years, he’s compiled a 130-98 overall record, a .570 winning percentage, and is coming off a 37-win season in 2017, the fifth-most wins in schools history in a season and the most since the 2000 season (39).
“Justin Hill is one of the brightest rising stars in the college coaching ranks today,” said Aaron Fitt, Editor for D1Baseball.com. “He made an instant impact at McNeese and has sustained a consistent level of success over the course of his first four years at the helm. The Cowboys have obvious momentum under his leadership.”
Hill has also overseen a renovation of Joe Miller Ballpark that has seen the complex add new infield and foul territory turf, dugout improvements, new chair back box seating behind home plate, improvements in the clubhouse, third base side VIP boxes, as well as other projects.
Terms of his contract were not disclosed but he will receive a boost in salary that will be provided by private sources.
McNeese opens the 2018 season on Friday, Feb. 16 at home against Wichita State.
