Hayden White helps Benton storm back for another Division II boys state championship
CARENCRO – Hayden White of Benton led a second-day charge Tuesday and put the Tigers back in a very familiar position in the Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA State Golf Championships.
White carded a one-under-par 71, the lowest round of the day and the only sub-par round, and helped bring Benton back from a one-stroke deficit and give the Tigers their sixth Division II boys crown in seven years.
White finished with a two-day 70-71—141 score to take individual honors, winning by two shots over St. Thomas More’s Matt Weber. The two were tied entering Tuesday’s final round over the 6,516-yard par-72 The Farm d’Allie course, with Weber finishing second after a one-over 73 in the final round.
Benton posted a 333 team score in the final round, with Ryan Steed (83-86—169) finishing tied for 11th and Brodie Romero (84-86—170) tying for 14th as the Tigers’ other top scores.
St. Thomas More, which had led by one stroke 326-327 entering Tuesday’s final round, finished second after a 340 second round and a 666 total. St. Louis Catholic was third at 681 and Vandebilt Catholic was fourth at 686. Defending champion Teurlings Catholic finished fifth at 712.
Weber took an early lead with a two-stroke swing on the par-five first hole where he birdied and White bogeyed. But White birdied three in a row from the fourth through sixth holes and added a birdie at the par-four eighth hole, while Weber bogeyed the fourth and seventh and took a double-bogey at the par-four sixth hole while White was making one of his six birdies on the day.
White took a three-shot lead into the back nine, but Weber birdied the 10th and 11th and White birdied the 11th but bogeyed the 13th to cut the margin to one. Both bogeyed the par-four 14th hole, and White took a two-shot lead when Weber bogeyed the 16th hole.
White took a three-putt bogey on the par-three 17th to slice the margin to one, but hit his second shot from 225 yards out within 10 feet on the par-five 18th and two-putted for a birdie and a two-stroke win.
