Call it a lucky or a run of bad luck, depending on your point of view.

Seven players with ties to Louisiana schools were among those chosen Thursday night to cap the five-round 2020 Major League Baseball Draft.

One star each from Tulane and the University of New Orleans, a pair of LSU standouts, a Tiger signee, a Northwestern State ace and a solid University of Louisiana shortstop were among those selected.

With the second pick of the second round, the Baltimore Orioles selected Tulane outfielder Hudson Haskin.

A draft-eligible sophomore from New York, Haskin hit .333 with a home run and 14 RBI in 17 games in the abbreviated 2020 season. Haskin is slated to make $1.91 million and is likely to sign.

Also in the second round, LSU pitcher Cole Henry was chosen 55th overall by the World Champion Washington Nationals.

A draft-eligible sophomore out of Florence, Alabama, Henry was LSU’s No. 1 starter in the abbreviated 2020 season, posting a 2-1 record with a 1.89 ERA in 19 innings with 23 strikeouts. Henry is slotted to make $1.31 million, making it likely that he will sign.

In the Competitive Balance Round B following the second round, former John Curtis and Parkview Baptist star Daniel Cabrera of LSU went to the Detroit Tigers 62nd overall.

The junior outfielder batted .345 with two homers and 12 RBI in the shortened 2020 season. A former freshman All-American and U.S. Collegiate National Team member, Cabrera played high school baseball at John Curtis Christian before transferring to Parkview Baptist for his senior season. The signing slot for Cabrera is $1.1 million. He is expected to depart.

In round four, LSU signee Beck Way out of Northwest Florida State Jr. College was drafted by the New York Yankees in the fourth round with the 129th overall pick in process.

Way (6-4, 200) was 5-0 with an 0.67 ERA for the Raiders this past season. Way recorded 58 strikeouts in just 40 innings pitched. The amount slotted for where Way was chosen is $438.700.

In round five, the Pittsburgh Pirates selected Northwestern State pitcher Logan Hofmann with the 138th pick overall.

The Canadien was brilliant in the shortened 2020 season, going 4-0 with a perfect earned run average for the Demons. In 28 innings, Hofmann allowed just 14 hits and struck out 38. The money slot for Hofmann is $402,000.

Eric Orze of The University of New Orleans went 150th overall in the fifth round to the New York Mets.

Orze remains a great story. He has beaten cancer in two forms to become an excellent pitcher.

In 2020, Orze was 3-0 with a 2.75 ERA in four appearances. In 19 and two-third innings, Orze recorded 29 strikeouts. The money slot for Orze is $357,100.

With the very next selection, University of Louisiana shortstop Hayden Cantrelle was picked by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Cantrelle, who prepped at Teurlings Catholic, was off to a slow start, batting just .148 in 16 games, but he had four home runs and 14 RBI for the Ragin’ Cajuns. The slot for Cantrelle’s spot is $353,700.
