Grambling QB Hawkins, Louisiana LB Ossai, ULM punter Devyn McCormick named LSWA players of week

LAKE CHARLES – Grambling quarterback Quaterius Hawkins, Louisiana linebacker KC Ossai and ULM punter Devyn McCormick have been named this week’s Louisiana Sports Writers Association Football Players of the Week, the LSWA announced on Monday.

Hawkins led Grambling to a 47-21 win over Northwestern State in Saturday’s Shreveport Classic played at Independence Stadium. He completed 13 of 23 passes for 293 yards and three touchdowns with 292 of those and all three scores coming in the first half as the Tigers built a 41-7 lead at the break. Grambling exploded with 27 second quarter points behind TD tosses by Hawkins of 83, 20 and 71 yards.

Ossai helped the Cajuns extend their winning streak to 15 straight games with a 49-21 win over Eastern Michigan. The linebacker recorded a career-high nine tackles and forced a fumble. His play helped spark a defense that forced five second half turnovers, including four on EMU’s final four drives of the game.

McCormick kept the field position at a disadvantage for Nicholls the entire game, averaging 44 yards on five punts with three downed inside the 20 in the Warhawks’ 35-7 win. He launched a season-long 55-yarder in the first quarter.

Players of the Week are voted on by a panel of Louisiana sportswriters and are nominated by each school’s sports information directors.
