Darrah Schaefer, Chairman of the Board and Steve Worthy Chief Executive Officer of the Fore! Kids Foundation are to be commended for extending Tianlang Guan of China an exemption into the Zurich Classic.

Guan proved Thursday and Friday that his accomplishments at The Masters were no fluke.

When Guan qualified for The Masters by winning the Asia Pacific Masters with a score of 15-under par, he became the youngest to ever compete in The Masters and he went on to win the coveted Silver Cup for being the low amateur. As the golf world gets to know this eighth grader, they will also learn that he was the youngest to ever win the China Amateur Championship. At the time, he became the youngest to ever compete in a European PGA Tour event. They will also learn of his giving nature including the relationship he has built with the Lakewood Junior Golf Program of New Orleans over the last two years.

Guan’s scores of 72-69 on the wet fairways and greens of TPC Louisiana where “lift, clean and place” was in effect on Thursday put a strain on his 249-yard average driving distance. But the young prodigy showed his ability to hit excellent fairway woods and hybrids where his playing partners were able to use easier-to-control medium to short irons. Guan’s short game never weakened under the pressure of having to get up and down and make critical putts. He is an exercise in patience and getting the most out of your game.

Guan’s qualification on the weeknd is a great opportunity for the golf fans of New Orleans to witness history firsthand both Saturday and Sunday. The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is to be congratulated for bringing this rare talent to the area for all of us to see.
