Gold Nuggets win 71-58 at Dillard
NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana erased a first-quarter deficit Monday and rolled to a 71-58 women’s basketball victory against city and HBCU rival Dillard at Dent Hall.
The Gold Nuggets (4-1) will play Mobile at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in XULA’s Convocation Center.
Shylia McGee produced XULA’s first double-double this season: 20 points and a season-high 10 rebounds. Magee was 7-of-10 from the floor, 3-of-4 on 3-pointers and 3-of-4 from the line in 31 minutes. The junior guard/forward, in her first season at XULA, also had four assists, a steal and a block.
The Bleu Devils led 17-9 in the eighth minute and 20-14 through one quarter, but XULA outscored Dillard 57-38 over the final three quarters.
Also contributing for the Gold Nuggets were Nia Bishop with 12 points, Mary Wilkins with a season-high 11 points, Abryhia Irons with a season-high 10 points, Autumn Chassion with a season-high eight assists and Ja’Kiylah Esco with a season-high three blocks..
XULA shot 41.5 percent from the floor and 63.6 percent — 7-of-11 — on 3-pointers. Wilkins made both her treys.
Taylor DeWitt had 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Dillard — 3-6 with a five-game losing streak — and Ayani Cockrell scored 13.
The winning margin was XULA’s largest against Dillard at Dent Hall in 14 years.
