Girls Soccer Playoffs: Pope John Paul II win opener while others start postseason Thursday

Prep Soccer Playoff Report for Thursday, Feb. 4

Pope John Paul II reached the Division IV quarterfinals a year ago.

This year, the Jaguars are hoping to make another run at a state championship.

That started Wednesday as the 11th-seeded Jaguars opened the LHSAA state playoffs with a 4-1 victory over No. 22 Westminster Christian 4-1 in Slidell.

Pope John Paul II (6-3-4) advances to play at No. 6 Catholic of New Iberia in the regional round. Westminster Christian finished its season 6-6-1.

Several area teams open playoff action today.

In Division I, No. 2 Mount Carmel Academy will face No. 31 Ponchatoula at 6 p.m. at Tad Gormley Stadium. No. 6 Mandeville plays host to No. 27 Live Oak at 6 p.m.

No. 13 Destrehan entertains No. 20 Baton Rouge at 6 p.m., No. 19 Hahnville hits the road to No. 14 Thibodaux.

In Division III, No. 17 Ursuline Academy plays at No. 16 Pearl River at 6 p.m. while No. 18 Lutcher hits the road to No. 15 David Thibodaux at 6 p.m.

In Division IV, No. 17 Northlake Christian is at No. 16 Calvary Baptist at 5 p.m. while No. 21 Riverside Academy is at No. 12 Highland Baptist at 6 p.m.

In the lone boys contest, unbeaten Jesuit, the No. 2 seed, plays host to No. 31 Ruston at 4 p.m. at John Ryan Stadium.
