Girls Prep Basketball Playoff Report: Local teams galore seek state semifinals berths tonight

A bevy of area teams are in action this evening seeking births in the state tournament semifinals at Rapides Coliseum in Alexandria next week.

In Class 5A, 15th-seed East St. John (28-7) faces a long trip to Natchitoches Central (27-9) at 6 p.m. The Lady Wildcats are coming off of a huge upset win over second-seed Ponchatoula. East St. John has won nine straight games.

In Class 4A, fourth-seed Warren Easton (23-11) hosts fifth-seed Bossier (26-6) at 6 p.m. The Eagles have won 14 straight games. Coming off of an upset victory at sixth-seed Ellender, 11th-seeded Salmen (24-8) travels to Monroe to take on third-seed Neville (23-8) at 6 p.m.

In Class 3A, sixth-seed Albany (26-5) treks to third-seed Northwest (28-3) 6:30 p.m. while second-seed Loranger (27-7) plays host to seventh-seed Iota (26-6) at 6 p.m. The Lady Wolves have won 17 straight games since losing to John Curtis Christian in the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic on Jan. 5.

In Class 2A, eighth-seeded French Settlement (24-6) plays at top-seed North Caddo (28-8) at 6 p.m. The Lady Rebels have won seven straight games.

In Division I, top-seed and defending state champion John Curtis Christian (28-1) plays host to ninth-seeded St. Joseph’s Academy (8-19) at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Patriots have won 22 straight games. Fourth-seed Mount Carmel (17-9) plays host to fifth-seeded Evangel Christian (17-15) at 5:30 p.m. Seventh-seeded Archbishop Chapelle (18-11) travels to Baton Rouge to face second-seed McKinley (28-4) at 6 p.m.

In Division II, fifth-seeded Cabrini (16-10) travels to Baton Rouge to face fourth-seed Lee Magnet (23-8) at 7 p.m. The Lady Patriots have won nine straight games.

Third-seed Ursuline (23-4) entertains sixth-seeded St. Louis Catholic (14-14) at 6 p.m. Ursuline has lost only to Loranger, Gulf Coast (MS) and to John Curtis Christian (twice).

In Division III, eighth-seed St. Mary’s Academy (13-19) is at Covington to take on top-seed Northlake Christian (28-1) at 6 p.m. The Lady Wolverines have won 18 straight games with their only loss coming to Doyle. Fifth-seeded Riverside (16-10) heads to Crowley to battle fourth-seed Notre Dame (22-8). Sixth-seed St. Katharine Drexel (15-8) plays at third-seeded Dunham (24-6) at 6:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets are a hot team, having won 10 straight games. The Tigers are hot as well, winners of nine straight games. Second-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas (22-8) plays host to Episcopal (20-10) at 6 p.m. The Lady Falcons have won nine consecutive games. The Knights have won six straight games.
