Girls Basketball: Ponchatoula gets revenge, takes over district lead with win over Northshore

Area Girls Prep Basketball Report for Saturday, Jan. 19

It was a showdown for first place in District 6-5A Friday night in Slidell.

In the end, visiting Ponchatoula proved to be too much and got revenge in the process.

Ponchatoula controlled play from start to finish, downing Northshore 64-49.

The Green Wave jumped out to an 18-12 lead after one quarter and led 35-20 by halftime. It was 49-32 going to the fourth quarter.

Senior Hailey Giaratano was outstanding, finishing with 29 points while freshman Jaylee Womack contributed 18 points. Junior Madison Gill finished with eight points.

Northshore had defeated Ponchatoula 43-39 at Ponchatoula back on Dec. 11. The Panthers were tenth while the Ponchatoula was 12th in the latest LHSAA Class 5A power rankings.

The Green Wave (20-6, 6-1) have now won five straight games. They return to action Tuesday at 6 pm against rival Hammond in 6-5A action while Northshore (21-7, 5-2) saw its nine game win streak come to an end. The Panthers are back in district play at Slidell Tuesday at 6 pm.
