Girls Basketball Playoffs: Newman falls short, Albany and Amite seek finals spots Wednesday
Fifth-seed Parkview Baptist built a lead and held off top seed Newman 43-38 in the LHSAA Girls Select Division III semifinals Tuesday night at University Center in Hammond.
Parkview Baptist came out pressuring Newman and forced a ton of early turnovers to build a lead of 13-6 after one quarter and the Eagles led 23-13 at halftime. Newman cut the deficit to 32-27 at the end of the third quarter.
Junior Addyson Bernhard led the Eagles with 17 points while freshman Anna Richerson added 15 points.
Junior Anaya Yunusah led the Greenies (21-5) with 16 points while sophomore Sanaa Bean finished with 12 points. Newman was plagued by 21 turnovers.
Parkview Baptist (29-5) advances to the championship game Friday at 4 p.m. against No. 6 seed Episcopal. The Knights upset No. 2 seed Holy Savior Menard 44-42.
Today, Albany goes after a big in the Non-Select Division II semifinals as the second-seeded Hornets take on No. 3 Brusly at 6:15 p.m. before defending state champion Amite, the No. 2 seed in the Non-Select Division III bracket, battles Winnfield at 8 p.m.
